The American Medical Association, American College of Cardiology, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine Strive to Improve Hospital Food Environments
Healthy Self Vegan is extremely pleased to announce recent progress made in the quest to improve U.S. hospital environments.
The ACC’s "Planting a Seed: Heart-Healthy Food Recommendations for Hospitals" states that “at least one plant-based main dish” should be offered and promoted at each meal. Furthermore, the recommendations say that processed meats [such as bacon, sausage, ham, hot dogs, and deli meats] shouldn't be offered. The ACC recommendations also call for plant-based main dishes, with a variety of vegetables & fruits, be served in all cafeterias and on-site restaurants.
Most people know that a plant-based lifestyle consisting of fresh produce is good for you. But just as important is understanding the need to remove processed meat from menus and that the hazards of such foods are strongly supported by scientific evidence.
According to a recent Health News Article entitled "Poor Diet Tied to Nearly Half of U.S. Deaths from Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes", processed meats are linked to 60,000 cardiovascular deaths per year. [Reuters: March 2017 ]
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a nonprofit health organization of 12,000 doctors founded in 1985, has always affirmed that “Numerous scientific studies show that healthful, plant-based meals can prevent and even reverse heart disease, diabetes and obesity.” Therefore, the PCRM encourages these higher standards and commends the AMA and ACC on its leadership in improving hospital food environments.
The AMA's and ACC’s recommendations reflect the Physicians Committee's Make Hospital Foods Healthy campaign, which urges hospitals to improve patient and cafeteria menus by banning processed meats and offering more disease-fighting plant-based meals, and by hosting restaurants that offer only healthful, low-fat, cholesterol-free meals.

Recently NBC News Special Anchor Maria Shriver launched a mini-series on the TODAY Show that Healthy Self Vegan found to be extremely interesting. It was entitled “Eating to 100” and was based off the book by National Geographic author Dan Buettner, “The Blue Zones Solution: Eating & Living Like The World’s Healthiest People”.
This TODAY Show mini-series was a look into the lifestyle of people living in five “Blue Zones” on earth – places with the highest percentage of people living long lives [to at least the age of 100] without preventable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

“Individuals get lucky, but populations don’t,” Buettner told NBC’S Maria Shriver in the TODAY series. “There’s too many people to chalk it up to collective luck, or even genes,” said Buettner.
